Whaler Vineyards in Ukiah sits in the heart of Mendocino County wine country, where Russ and Annie Nyborg started with just grapevines back in 1972. For the first nine years, they focused entirely on growing Zinfandel grapes—really good ones—and sold to other North Coast wineries. By 1981, they decided to make their own wine instead, and that’s when Whaler Vineyards as you know it today actually began.

Walking onto the property, you get a real sense of how seriously they take their craft. The Zinfandels are what built their reputation, and you can taste why once you’re in the tasting room. The whole experience feels unpretentious—you’re not walking into some slick operation trying to impress you. It’s a working vineyard that happens to welcome visitors and their dogs.

The vineyard itself is genuinely scenic, with those rolling Mendocino County hills in the background. You can sit outside with a glass of wine while your dog settles in beside you. Unlike a lot of places that give you a generic “dogs welcome” nod, Whaler actually creates space for them. There’s real ground to settle on, not just a patio squeezed between buildings.

The tasting experience moves at a relaxed pace. You’re not rushed through flights or pressured into club memberships. They pour good wine and answer questions about what you’re drinking, which makes a real difference when you’re trying to actually understand what Mendocino County Zinfandels taste like.

If you’re exploring the Ukiah wine region with your dog, Whaler gives you the chance to taste serious wine without the pretense that makes some vineyard visits feel stuffy. It’s the kind of place where you can spend a couple hours, feel like you learned something, and head out genuinely glad you stopped.
