In the rolling hills east of Healdsburg, Alexander Valley Vineyards sits on land that’s been transformed over more than a century. The Wetzel family bought this property back in 1962, turning what had been 19th-century homestead with prune orchards and pastures into a working vineyard. Today it’s a genuine family operation where you and your dog can spend an afternoon without any fuss.

The grounds are genuinely spacious, which matters when you’ve got a dog along. There’s real room to walk around the property while you’re between tastings or waiting for others in your group. The views look out across the valley, and the natural landscape gives your dog plenty to sniff and explore. It’s not a manicured showpiece winery, which frankly works in your favor—nobody’s going to stress if your dog wants to wander the outdoor areas.

Staff here seem used to dogs showing up. They’re straightforward and helpful rather than overly precious about the whole thing. If you ask about what works best for visiting with a dog, they’ll give you honest information. The winery does host various events throughout the year, and some of these are dog-friendly, though it’s worth checking ahead about what’s happening when you plan to visit.

The wine selection focuses on what grows well here—Cabernet Sauvignon is particularly strong, and they do solid Chardonnay. Tastings happen outside mostly, which is the whole point when you’re traveling with a dog anyway. Bring water for your dog since you’ll be spending time in the sun, and don’t assume there will be shade everywhere on the grounds.

The location works well for combining with other stops around Healdsburg. It’s not right in town, but it’s not so far that you’re isolated. If you’re planning to hit multiple wineries with your dog, this one’s considerably more relaxed about it than some of the fancier spots closer to the downtown plaza.
