Baxter Winery

8660 Hwy. 128, Philo, California 95466

(707) 895-3173

Baxter Winery sits in Philo, right in the heart of Anderson Valley wine country, and it’s one of the few places around here where you can actually bring your dog to the tasting area. The winery was founded in 2002 by Phil L. Baxter and his son Phil T.G. Baxter, and they’ve built a solid reputation for single-vineyard wines sourced from Anderson Valley and the surrounding Mendocino County region.

What makes this place work for dog owners is the outdoor patio setup. You can sit out there with a glass of wine while your dog hangs out beside you, taking in the vineyard views and the rolling hills in the distance. The staff is genuinely welcoming to well-behaved dogs, which makes a real difference when you’re trying to enjoy yourself without feeling like you’re inconveniencing anyone. The patio isn’t cramped either—there’s actual space for your dog to settle in comfortably while you’re tasting through their lineup.

The Baxters focus on handcrafted wines made in smaller batches, which means you’re tasting stuff that reflects their actual winemaking approach rather than mass-produced blends. Their award-winning selections showcase what Anderson Valley does well, and the tasting experience gives you a genuine sense of how these specific vineyard sites express themselves in the wines.

The drive out to Philo is worth it if you’re already exploring Mendocino County wine country. Highway 128 takes you through some beautiful redwood and vineyard scenery. If you’re planning to spend the afternoon, there are other tasting rooms within a short drive, so you could make it a longer wine-tasting day with your dog. Just keep in mind that the patio is your main dog-friendly space here, so you won’t be bringing your dog inside the main tasting room, but that’s actually more comfortable for everyone anyway.
