Birdstone Winery sits on 40 acres of vineyard and orchard on the eastern edge of Madera County, and it’s one of the few places in the region where your dog can actually roam off-leash while you’re tasting wine. The family-owned operation focuses on hand-crafted wines made from local fruit, aged in a combination of stainless steel tanks and oak barrels. They work directly with nearby farmers to source the best fruit possible, which means you’re getting wines made from grapes picked at their peak.
You’ll find the expected varietals here — Merlot, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah — but Birdstone also experiments with grapes that thrive in Central California’s climate. If you want to try something beyond the usual lineup, their Tempranillo, Sangiovese, and Barbera are worth exploring. The Port is solid too if you’re in the mood for something richer.
The real draw for anyone traveling with a dog is the property itself. Well-behaved dogs have the run of the place off-leash, which means they can wander the vineyard roads and trails through the orchards while you’re there. It’s a genuinely relaxed setup, and your dog gets more of an experience than just sitting at a tasting room table. The vineyard landscape here is pretty pleasant — you’re looking at actual working vines and fruit trees, not just manicured tasting room grounds.
One important note: during special events, dogs may not be welcome, so if you’re planning to visit outside regular tasting hours (11am to 5pm Friday through Sunday), call ahead to confirm your dog can join you. That small check-in will save you a wasted trip.
