With family winemaking roots in Italy, Brutocao Cellars has been operating for over 25 years in downtown Hopland, specializing in red wines like Merlot and Zinfandel. The distinctive Lion of St. Mark logo on their labels reflects the family’s commitment to quality and traditional craftsmanship.
The Tuscan-style tasting room sits within the historic Brutocao Schoolhouse Plaza, which occupies what used to be Hopland’s High School. The grounds themselves are what make this place worth the drive with your dog. You’ll find six Olympic regulation bocce ball courts spread across the property, and the outdoor spaces are genuinely pleasant to spend time in—there’s room to wander around while your dog stays on leash and explores alongside you.
What I appreciated most about visiting was how the setting actually encourages you to stick around. You’re not rushed through a tasting and back out the door. Instead, you can pour a glass of Estate wine, find a spot with a view, and settle in for a while. Your dog gets fresh air and the chance to experience the sights and sounds of the winery grounds. The bocce courts add a nice element too—it’s a genuine way to spend an afternoon with friends or family, and having your dog there makes it feel more like a relaxing outing than a formal wine event.
The property itself is shaded in some areas, which matters if you’re visiting during warmer months. Bring water for your dog since you’ll likely be out there longer than a quick tasting. The winery welcomes dogs on leash throughout the grounds, so there’s no restriction on where you can roam together.
Hours and special events vary seasonally, so checking their website before you go makes sense if you’re driving from elsewhere in Mendocino County. If you’re passing through Hopland on Highway 101, this is a straightforward stop that doesn’t feel like a typical wine country tourist trap.
