Carmel Ridge Winery sits in a prime spot in Monterey County, just a short walk from the Monterey Bay Aquarium and the energy of downtown. The tasting room itself is what makes the trip worthwhile—you get views of the ocean while you’re sampling their award-winning wines, which honestly changes the whole experience. I’ve sat at their bar on a clear afternoon and watched the light hit the water while working through a flight, and it’s hard to beat that setting.

Dogs are welcome here, which opens up a nice half-day plan if you’re exploring the area with yours. You can walk over from some of the good restaurants nearby, grab a glass, and your dog can hang out with you in the tasting room. The staff doesn’t make a fuss about it—they’re used to having dogs around and treat them as regular guests rather than something they’re tolerating.

The wine selection leans toward California varietals, and the tasting room staff know their inventory well. They’re not the type to oversell you on a wine that doesn’t suit your taste, and they’ll actually listen if you mention what you like rather than just pouring everything they have. If you’re not into wine but your travel partner is, there’s enough visual interest and comfortable seating that you won’t feel stuck waiting around.

The neighborhood around the winery has changed a lot in recent years, with more shops and galleries opening up on the surrounding blocks. You can easily spend an hour here and then take your dog for a walk through downtown afterward. Park on one of the side streets if the main lot is full—there’s usually something available within a block or two, and the walk itself is pleasant enough.
