You have to see this replica of a medieval Italian castle to believe it—and thousands of people do, each day. Since it opened in 2007 after 13 years of construction, the “Napa Castle” has become one of the valley’s most popular tourist attractions. With its towers, high walls, and sprawling grounds, it genuinely feels like stepping back in time. The views of Napa Valley from the property are stunning, especially in late afternoon when the light hits the stone just right.

The castle was a long-time goal of fourth-generation winemaker Dario Sattui, whose V. Sattui Winery in St. Helena also welcomes dogs. The attention to detail throughout—from the courtyard layout to the architectural elements—shows how seriously Sattui took bringing his vision to life. The property hosts events throughout the year including weddings, festivals, and music performances, so it’s worth checking what’s happening during your visit.

Leashed dogs can tour the castle with their owner and are allowed at outside tastings. The stone pathways and open courtyards work reasonably well for walking a dog, though you’ll want to bring water and be mindful of the heat during summer months. The crowds can get heavy on weekends and during peak season, so a calm dog handles the experience better. Since dogs aren’t allowed inside the castle itself, you’ll want to plan accordingly if you’re hoping to explore the interior—some people prefer to do that portion dog-free while a travel companion stays with their dog in the courtyard areas.

Reading up on the castle’s history before you go definitely enhances the visit. Make a reservation before arriving with your dog, as they require advance notice for canine visitors. The drive from Calistoga takes about 20 minutes, making it an easy half-day outing whether you’re staying locally or passing through wine country.
