Cornerstone Sonoma spreads across a sprawling marketplace in the heart of Sonoma wine country, mixing boutique wine rooms, galleries, and food vendors with something you don’t usually find at a typical winery destination—a working test kitchen and gardens where Sunset Magazine actually develops and photographs recipes. It’s a genuine hybrid space where you and your dog can wander for hours without it feeling like a traditional wine tasting.
The real draw for us was the Sunset Gardens and Outdoor Test Kitchen, which opened recently. These aren’t typical ornamental gardens; they’re divided into separate “rooms” designed to show off different styles and plantings. There’s a Cocktail Garden, a Farm Garden, a Gathering Space with actual seating, a Backyard Orchard, and a Flower Room. Walking through with your dog on leash, you’ll get a sense of what plants actually work together and how different spaces can flow into each other. The designers from Homestead Design Collective clearly thought about how people move through outdoor areas, which makes it genuinely pleasant to explore rather than just walk through.
The marketplace itself has enough going on that you could easily spend a few hours. Beyond the wine rooms, there are shops focused on home goods and artisanal foods scattered throughout. On weekends, live music happens in various spots around the property. Your dog might not care about a wine flight, but they’ll appreciate the open layout and the fact that nobody minds a leashed dog moving through the shopping areas or sitting with you while you grab food from one of the vendors.
The grounds have a laid-back feel despite being a pretty polished operation. It doesn’t feel like you’re being herded through a tourist attraction. If you’re spending time in Sonoma and want to see something beyond the standard winery experience, this is worth a morning or afternoon visit.
