When you step into Donatoni Winery, the first thing you’ll notice is the aircraft theme throughout the space. This isn’t random—Hank Donatoni spent 36 years as a commercial airline pilot, retiring as Captain of the 747-400, while his wife Sandi worked as a Flight Attendant for 37 years, eventually becoming a Purser on that same aircraft. Their passion for flying clearly runs deep, and they’ve channeled it into their tasting room’s design and atmosphere.
The winery’s history is interesting too. It started back in 1979 near LAX on La Cienaga Boulevard, but the operation eventually moved to Paso Robles, where they’ve made their home in wine country. The decision to relocate wasn’t just about changing locations—it was rooted in their commitment to quality. They’ve always sourced their grapes exclusively from Paso Robles vineyards, believing the region produces superior fruit that translates directly into better wine. That philosophy has stuck with them for decades.
What sets Donatoni apart is the combination of serious winemaking expertise with a genuine sense of humor. Their winemaker brings 46 years of experience to the job, so you’re tasting wines made by someone who knows what they’re doing. But the overall vibe here isn’t pretentious or stuffy—the aviation theme and the owners’ personalities make it feel more approachable and fun.
Dogs are welcome to join you, which makes it easy to spend an afternoon exploring their selection. The tasting room captures that unique blend of passion projects done right: people who had successful careers in one field decided to pursue their love of wine with the same dedication and professionalism. You’ll taste that commitment in the glass.
Since hours and operations can vary seasonally, check their website before heading out to make sure they’re open when you plan to visit.
