Husch Vineyards sits in Anderson Valley near Philo, about two and a half hours north of San Francisco on the way toward the Mendocino coast. The tasting room itself is genuinely charming—a converted pony barn from the late 1800s with character you can actually feel when you walk in. It’s one of those places where you and your dog can settle in without anyone making a fuss about it.
The winery is run by third-generation family members who manage their own vineyards, which means they control the quality of their fruit from the ground up. That hands-on approach extends to the winemaking too. They produce 22 different wines total, with six distributed nationally, but you’ll find small-lot special releases only available at the tasting room itself. It’s worth asking what they’ve got that month.
What struck me during my visit was how seriously they take the actual winemaking process. The team pays close attention to how grapes develop on the vine and handles them carefully once they’re picked. The result is wines that let you taste the fruit rather than feeling over-manipulated. The staff knows what they’re talking about and isn’t condescending if you don’t—they genuinely seem to enjoy helping people find wines they’ll like.
Anderson Valley’s location gives you options for your visit. You can taste through their lineup, and the staff will happily suggest food pairings or even share recipes if you’re planning to cook with their wines once you get home. The setting is relaxed enough that your dog can hang out comfortably while you’re tasting, which makes for a much easier afternoon than juggling a restless dog or rushing through the experience. The vineyard views around the tasting room are worth the drive on their own.
