Shadow Ranch Vineyard

7050 Fairplay Rd., Somerset, California 95684

(530) 620-2785

Shadow Ranch Vineyard sits high in the Sierra Nevada foothills near Somerset, where you’ll find genuine Gold Rush-era buildings—the original homestead, barn, and outbuildings still standing from when the property was established in 1888. It’s part of the Fair Play American Viticultural Area, a quieter wine region that doesn’t get the same crowds as Napa or Sonoma.

The tasting experience here is straightforward and unpretentious. You can sample their handcrafted wines while looking out across the vineyards and the surrounding landscape—the views really do stretch across the hills. The setting feels authentically rural, not like a polished resort experience, which is refreshing if you’re tired of the wine country formula.

Dogs on leashes are welcome, and the property’s layout actually works well for a visit with a dog. You can walk through the vineyard grounds while tasting, and your dog gets to experience the same foothills atmosphere you do. It’s not a huge, manicured tasting room setup, so there’s a genuine ease to bringing a dog along—no one’s going to stress if your dog wants to lie down under an oak tree while you’re finishing your pour.

The Fair Play area is worth exploring more broadly if you’re making the drive from Sacramento or the Bay Area. It’s less touristy than other Gold Country wine spots, and the elevation gives it genuinely different growing conditions and cooler-climate wines. The drive out takes you through real foothill scenery, not just wine country infrastructure.

Bring water for your dog and expect the typical Gold Country heat in summer—those Sierra Nevada foothills get warm, and shade is limited on the vineyard grounds. The best time to visit is usually spring or fall when temperatures are easier for walking around.
