Joullian Vineyards sits at 1,400 feet in Carmel Valley on 655 acres of hillside bench land, which means you get real elevation and real views as you walk the grounds with your dog. The vineyard was established in 1982, and the winery building itself came together in 1991 with a specific design philosophy—each vineyard block gets processed separately so the grapes from different sections show their individual character in the final wine. The focus here is on Bordeaux varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon Blanc, and Semillon. There’s also history embedded in the place. Owner Dick Sias planted Carmel Valley’s first Zinfandel on the property himself, and that matters if you’re interested in how the region developed.
During tastings, you’re sampling wines made from grapes grown right in front of you, which changes how the experience feels compared to a winery without that direct connection. Dogs are welcome here, though it’s worth calling ahead about their specific policies and where exactly dogs can roam.
