Kirigin Cellars has truly carved out a niche for dog lovers since its transformation in 2000 under new ownership. Sprawling across 11 picturesque acres in Gilroy, this winery offers a delightful selection of wines alongside a genuinely welcoming atmosphere for dogs. The story behind this dog-friendly focus is unusual—a local dog club once sought to host an event on the property, which led to the establishment of a warm community of canine enthusiasts that’s only grown since.
Today, several clubs use Kirigin Cellars to host AKC-sanctioned events throughout the year. If you time your visit right, you might catch rally, obedience, or lure coursing competitions while sipping a glass of their Vino de Mocca. It’s an energizing way to spend an afternoon, watching dogs work while enjoying vineyard views.
For casual visits, the winery welcomes well-behaved dogs to roam the expansive outdoor grounds. There’s genuine space here—your dog can stretch their legs, play, and move around without feeling confined to a small patio. The winery’s own border collie is known for being ball-crazy and will happily join in if you bring a tennis ball along. Watching other dogs interact with the resident dog happens naturally, and staff don’t make a fuss about it.
The tasting selections reflect the region’s terroir, and the staff genuinely knows their wines and shares insights without being pushy. You get a real sense that they understand why people choose to bring dogs here and treat the experience accordingly. The whole setup feels low-key rather than pretentious—you’re just as welcome sitting in a folding chair with a glass as you would be at a formal tasting room.
The Santa Clara Valley heat can be intense in summer, so earlier visits work better for dogs. Check their website for current hours and event schedules before heading out, since AKC events occasionally affect regular tasting availability.
