In Italian, “Macchia” means “the spot,” and in the Lodi area, this winery has earned its reputation as exactly that — a destination where people serious about wine can find small lots of high-quality vintages at reasonable prices. Tim Holdener built the winery around a straightforward philosophy: focus on what works rather than chasing trends. He and his team were drawn to Lodi specifically because they recognized potential in the region’s vineyards that many winemakers outside the area had overlooked for years.

The heart of Macchia’s selection is their Zinfandels. They make several different bottlings, each one distinct, which gives you a real sense of how this single varietal can shift and change depending on the vineyard and the vintage. It’s the kind of lineup that rewards spending a little time at the tasting room, comparing notes between pours.

The tasting room itself has a dedicated area where dogs can move around comfortably while you’re inside swirling and sipping. It’s not a sprawling outdoor setup, but it’s a genuine accommodation rather than an afterthought. Water dishes are available if you ask, so your dog won’t go thirsty while you’re working through their current releases.

Acampo is a small spot in San Joaquin County, about twenty minutes from downtown Lodi, so plan your visit accordingly — this isn’t a quick stop between other wineries. The winery is fairly low-key about their hours, so checking their website before heading out will save you a trip. It’s worth the effort if you’re looking for solid wines at prices that don’t require a second mortgage, and you want to bring your dog along without it being a production.
