Welcome to Oso Libre Ranch, which means “Free Bear” in Spanish—a name that reflects the blended family heritage and captures the spirit of early California pioneers. Linda and Chris Behr purchased 90 acres of raw land in the acclaimed Adelaida region of Paso Robles back in 1996, and they’ve spent the years since methodically transforming it into a sustainable, modern working ranch. The winery itself opened in October 2009, after the Behrs had spent considerable time learning the craft of viticulture and winemaking from the ground up.

What sets Oso Libre apart is the genuine enjoyment Linda and Chris bring to their work. That enthusiasm carries through in their integrated approach to the property—they’ve developed a program that weaves together their vineyards, wines, and Angus cattle operation. It’s not a side hustle or a vanity project; it’s a lifestyle they’ve committed to building, and you can sense that when you visit.

The ranch sits in one of Paso Robles’ premier growing regions, where the Adelaida area’s elevation and climate create ideal conditions for quality wine production. The sustainable approach they’ve taken means the land is managed with long-term vision rather than quick extraction. You’ll see that in how the property is maintained and in the care that goes into each vintage.

The combination of wine tasting and the working ranch atmosphere gives visitors a more complete picture of what it takes to operate at this level. This isn’t a high-volume tasting room experience—it’s a chance to engage with people who actually live and work the land you’re standing on. Since hours vary seasonally, check their website before heading out to make sure they’re open when you plan to visit.
