In the northeastern hillside above Napa Valley, Pope Valley Winery sits quietly away from the main tourist crush, producing premium wines in a setting that genuinely feels like stepping back in time. The original hand-dug cave with hand-hewn redwood timbers is still standing, along with the historic farmhouse and a fully equipped blacksmith’s workshop complete with original tools. It’s the kind of place where you can actually imagine the property’s working past.

The tasting room itself has a refreshingly unpretentious vibe. You’ll find limited production and winery-only releases here, the kind of bottles you won’t see distributed elsewhere. A custom wine flight runs $30 with no appointment needed, though they do offer premium tasting packages if you want to book ahead. The staff conducts complimentary tours daily, which give real insight into how they operate.

What makes Pope Valley particularly good for visiting with a dog is the actual space to move around. Beyond the tasting room, there’s a picnic area and bocce ball court where you can settle in for a while. Bring your own lunch or grab brie and crackers from the tasting room to round things out. Your dog can hang out with you as long as they’re on leash, which is a straightforward requirement they enforce consistently.

The setting itself rewards lingering. You’re far enough from the valley floor that there’s quiet here, and the combination of the old structures, the grounds, and decent wine makes for an afternoon that doesn’t feel rushed or crowded. The drive up involves some winding roads through Pope Valley, so it’s not quite as convenient as hitting a winery right off Highway 29, but that’s precisely why it stays calmer. Check their website for current hours and days they’re open before you head out.
