RIVINO Estate Winery

4001 Rivino Ranch Rd, Ukiah, California 95482

Perched on the edge of the Russian River in beautiful Mendocino County, RIVINO Estate Winery sits on 250 acres of vineyard land where you can actually see the winemaking process happen. The Jahnke family has owned this boutique operation for generations, and they handle everything from growing their grapes to bottling the finished wine right on the property. That means what you’re tasting is genuinely made here, not shipped in from somewhere else.

The tasting room has a relaxed, unpretentious vibe that feels nothing like the stuffy wine bars you might find in Napa. You can bring your dog along without anyone making a fuss about it, which makes a real difference when you’re spending an afternoon in wine country. The vineyard views are genuinely nice — rolling hills and grapevines stretching out around you — and there’s enough space that you don’t feel cramped even when other visitors show up.

What impressed me most was how hands-on the Jahnkes are with their operation. They’re not just slapping a family name on bottles made elsewhere. The commitment to doing everything themselves, from vine to glass, shows in what you’re actually drinking. The wines reflect what grows in their specific patch of Mendocino County, with all its particular soil and climate conditions.

If you’re driving up Highway 101 through Ukiah and want to break up the trip with a proper wine tasting instead of a quick tourist stop, this is worth the detour. The Russian River location gives the whole experience a peaceful feeling, especially in late afternoon when the light gets good. Bring water for your dog and plan to stay at least an hour if you want to actually talk to someone about what you’re tasting rather than just walking through a typical wine-bar setup.
