Roth Estate sits in the Russian River Valley just south of Healdsburg, and it’s one of those places where you can actually relax with your dog instead of feeling rushed through a tasting. The winery started in 2001 focusing on Bordeaux varietals from Alexander Valley, then expanded about a decade later to include cooler-climate wines from the Sonoma Coast. That range means you’ll find plenty to taste, whether you prefer their bolder reds or something with more restraint.

The tasting room and patio are genuinely set up for hanging out. There’s cornhole, Scrabble, Jenga, and other games scattered around, so you’re not just standing at a counter swirling wine. Your dog can settle on the patio while you play a round or two between tastings. It’s the kind of setup that acknowledges people actually want to spend time here, not just check a box.

The location works well if you’re exploring the Russian River Valley. It’s close enough to downtown Healdsburg that you’re not isolated, but far enough out that it feels more low-key than some of the bigger operations closer to town. Coming from San Francisco, you’re looking at roughly ninety minutes to get here—straightforward drive north. If you’re based in Sonoma, it’s about an hour away, making it easy to combine with visits to other parts of Sonoma County.

The fact that they’ve been making wine here for over two decades and have continued to expand their focus rather than just relying on their initial success suggests they actually care about their product. With your dog able to hang out on the patio, you can take your time tasting without feeling like you’re holding up a line of people behind you. Bring some water for your dog and expect to spend a few hours if the weather’s nice.
