To longtime fans of this wine region, the name Rotta Winery might ring a few bells, but only if you were familiar with Paso Robles’ wines before the rest of the country barely knew where Paso was. In fact, you have to go back several decades to discover the beginnings of Rotta Winery, which was one of the first three wineries established in Paso Robles. The original vineyard and winery were started in 1856 by a Frenchman named Adolph Siot, who later sold the successful enterprise to Joe Rotta in 1908.

In the 1920s, Rotta then sold it to his brother Clement Rotta, who bonded the winery after Prohibition in the 1930s and forged the label into one best known for its hearty Zinfandels. For decades, the Rotta name represented serious winemaking in an era when Paso Robles was still relatively unknown to most California wine drinkers. The winery’s deep roots in the region run parallel to the area’s transformation from a quiet agricultural community into a destination for wine enthusiasts.

Today, the Rotta label is being revived by one of their grandsons, bringing the family’s winemaking legacy into the present day. Visiting here means stepping into genuine wine country history rather than the polished newer tasting rooms that dot the region. You’re looking at a property with real continuity and authenticity, where the wine itself tells the story of multiple generations and changing times.

The location in Templeton puts you near some of Paso Robles’ quieter corners, away from the busier downtown tasting room strips. It’s worth planning a visit if you want to taste wines with actual historical grounding and meet people who understand this vineyard’s particular place in California wine history. Check their website for current days and hours before heading out, as family-run operations sometimes adjust their schedules seasonally.
