Saracina Winery spreads across 600 acres in Hopland, and the first thing that strikes you is how much space there is to actually move around. Three hundred acres of vineyards run across the property, all farmed organically and certified by CCOF, which means you’re walking through land managed with real care. The sheep and goats grazing on the hillsides aren’t just scenery—they’re part of how the winery operates, and it gives the whole place a working-farm feel that’s pretty different from the more polished wine country you might expect.

The wine caves here are genuinely interesting. They’re carved directly from rock and were apparently the first of their kind in Mendocino County when they were built. Tastings happen inside them, which means you’re actually down in solid stone while you’re sampling wines. Your dog can hang out in the spacious grassy area up top while you’re doing that, and the winery leaves out water bowls and pickup bags so you’re not juggling supplies the whole time.

If you want to actually explore, there are hiking trails that wind through the property. You pass 100-year-old olive trees, pomegranate orchards, and organic vegetable gardens. There’s a wild azalea canyon if you’re interested in that kind of landscape, plus ponds where you’ll see herons and Canadian geese hanging around. It’s the kind of place where you can spend a solid afternoon just walking around without feeling like you’re on a manicured path.

The lounge chairs scattered around the grassy area are the real draw if you want to settle in. You can actually sit down with a glass of wine and watch your dog sniff around while taking in the whole scene. It’s low-key enough that you don’t feel rushed. Hours vary seasonally, so check their website before heading out to Hopland.
