Starfield Vineyards planted 31 acres of grapes on their hillside vineyards east of Placerville, choosing only varieties which grow in southern Europe near the Mediterranean Sea. These Rhône, Italian and Spanish varieties are traditionally grown on rocky hillsides in warm Mediterranean climates. There they produce delicate, floral white wines and savory, robust red wines. The vineyard calls these their “Mountain Mediterraneans,” and it’s a genuine expression of what grows naturally in those specific soils and conditions rather than what might be trendy elsewhere.
The setup here is thoughtfully designed around the landscape itself. They’ve planted seventeen different varieties across twenty-four blocks of roughly 1.5 acres each. That small block size lets them position each variety in its preferred microclimate—the warmer spots for varieties that need heat, the cooler areas for ones that benefit from shade. It also means an entire block ripens evenly, so they harvest each variety at peak maturity rather than rushing to get everything in at once.
If you’re visiting with your dog, you’ll find 3 miles of nature trails winding through the property, all dog-friendly as long as your dog stays leashed. The trails give you a genuine walk through the working vineyards rather than just a tasting room experience. You’ll see the different varieties growing in their blocks, get a feel for the hillside terrain, and understand why they chose this particular location. It’s a nice setup for a dog who’s comfortable on a leash and can handle some elevation change.
The tasting room itself is where you sample what those Mediterranean varieties produce in El Dorado County’s specific conditions—wines that taste like they belong to this place. If you’re exploring the wine country roads around Placerville with your dog, this vineyard offers something different from the standard tasting experience, with the trails making it worth the stop even if wine isn’t your main interest.
