Tara Bella is open by appointment only, which means you’re not going to roll up and find crowds. If you’re in the area and want to try your luck, give them a call—if they’re around, they’ll usually welcome you to stop by. For a more reliable visit, call ahead or send an email to set something up.

The winery sits on a dirt road, so the drive itself signals you’re heading somewhere intentional. What makes Tara Bella worth the effort is their commitment to single-vineyard, estate-grown wines with no blending. Every bottle spends 22 months aging in French oak, then goes through additional bottle aging. That discipline shows in their track record: 14 gold medals and 2 double golds on past vintages.

Getting there from San Francisco or the South Bay is straightforward. Take 101 North across the Golden Gate Bridge and continue into Santa Rosa. Exit at River Road and head left, crossing back over the freeway. Stay on River Road for about 3 miles, then turn left onto Olivet Road. Watch for the first left turn past the frontage road onto Viking Road—it’s unpaved, so go slow.

From Healdsburg and points north, take 101 South and exit at River Road. Bear right and go 3 miles on River Road before turning left onto Olivet Road, then left again onto Viking Road.

The location on Viking Road means you’re driving into actual vineyard country, away from the commercial strip. Bring your dog along for the appointment—many small wineries in Sonoma County are welcoming to visitors with dogs, especially in quieter, more rural settings like this one. The intimate scale of the operation means your visit will feel personal, not like you’re being herded through a tasting room. Just keep in mind the unpaved road can get muddy after rain, so plan accordingly.
