Toogood Estate Winery sits in the rolling hills of Fair Play, where the elevation and cooler temperatures of El Dorado County’s wine country create ideal growing conditions for serious vintages. The winery has been operating since 2002, and the 12 acres of vineyards show real commitment to quality—you’ll see Zinfandel, Primitivo, Tempranillo, Pinot Noir, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc planted across the property. The variety means there’s something to taste whether you prefer bold reds or lighter expressions.
When we visited with our dog, it was immediately clear they’re genuinely welcoming to well-behaved dogs on leash. There’s nothing performative about it—dogs are just part of the experience here. We could sit with our wine while our dog relaxed beside us, watching the vineyard rows stretch out toward the surrounding Gold Country landscape. The setting itself is what makes the visit memorable: genuine wine country views without feeling like you’re at a tourist trap.
The tasting experience focuses on what they’re actually making rather than theatrical presentations. If you’re in the Fair Play area exploring the larger wine region, Toogood Estate Winery is a solid stop. It’s not overly formal or crowded, which our dog appreciated as much as we did. The grounds have enough space that you don’t feel cramped, and having a leashed dog there doesn’t draw any judgment or awkward glances.
Fair Play sits about an hour northeast of Sacramento, so it works well if you’re making a wine country trip through El Dorado County. Plan to spend an hour or two here without feeling rushed. The winery’s website has current tasting details and which wines are available on your visit day.
