Humboldt County
Humboldt County is fog, redwood, and coastal grit. Wine country runs thin here — a handful of small producers hold vineyards in the Mattole and Eel River drainages, where marine air hugs the ridges and pinot noir ripens slow under a constant overcast. Tasting rooms pour from farmhouses and converted barns outside Fortuna and Redway. Dogs travel everywhere; the Avenue of the Giants opens a shaded thirty-one-mile leashed walk through old growth. Pair a Humboldt pinot with a fog stroll at Trinidad Head. The county pours the state’s most remote wine, and the drive north is half the pleasure.
