Central Valley

The Central Valley is flat, open, and deeply underestimated. Lodi runs old-vine zinfandel back to pre-Prohibition plantings — trunks thicker than your calf, roots twelve feet into Mokelumne River sand. North through Clarksburg, a Delta breeze pulls heat off chenin blanc and verdelho by four. South through Madera and Fresno, summer sun bakes pasta reds worth the detour. Crowds thin out past Highway 99. Tasting rooms lean country, patios lean dog-friendly, and most owners pour like you’re a neighbor. Bring water, a shade leash, and a tolerance for the long, honest distance between stops. The valley rewards it.
